Book Review: The Commoner
(Marysol writes) I almost dismissed this book as an overly dramatic Japanese Cinderella. Boy would I have been wrong! Ever wish a book was longer? That's how I felt about "The Commoner". This story follows the life of a common Japanese girl who is presented with the choice to marry into the Japanese Imperial House and how her choices unfold generationally. Why do I love generational stories so much? It deals with the age old questions of the point of royalty. I could really whet your appetite by giving a little more about the story, but I wont give it away.
The author draws you into this removed world of the royal household. You feel like a fly on the wall that shouldn't be allowed to be there. The only downside is that I found myself wishing he would unpackage the inner workings of a private marriage or Japanese culture more. But that mystery is part what makes the story a bit allusive and page turning!
For all my local South African friends, yes, this book is coming with me in the suitcase to make the rounds for all of you! ;)
What's the best book you have read lately? Let me know in the comments, I'm looking for my next great read.
